Based on recent data the book describes the following issues related to the regulation of the cycle "wakefulness—sleep": phenomenology and definitions, anatomy, physiology and neurochemistry of brain systems, diurnal organization of the body "biological clock", interaction of circadian and homeostatic mechanisms, molecular genetics mechanisms, evolution of sleep, sleep deprivation, sleep and memory, sleep and hormones, the role of the peptide DSIP in the regulation of sleep. Each chapter is a brief introduction to the problem, provided with a list of recommended English-language theoretical reviews. The annex contains six short essays on the history of somnology.
The book is intended for researchers and university teachers and can be used as a textbook for graduate and undergraduate students specializing in the field of physiology, psychophysiology and psychoneurology.
